Hello Alessandra,
Windows Vista is not supported for about 7 years. So sadly, we cannot provide any solution for your issue.

Hello Alessandra,
Well, you can't reinstall it as this operating system isn't supported anymore. We've delivered updates as long as possible but after end of life - which was about 5 years ago - without any guarantee.

Hello Alessandra,
The exact same has happened to me. 12 days ago. After about 22 seconds, it said 'no connection. I checked the report, it says "Connection to Avira update bridge failed: -32001. Check your Internet connection or proxy settings." But, like you, my internet connection is good. I am still running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I guess, as Lukas says, we are just timed out. It is a pity as my PC is working just fine for my purposes.
However, maybe I can help. I tried online to find some antivirus support for Vista. Obviously, I cannot take any personal responsibility for these, you have to decide. I have not tried them yet, as I was looking for a solution on this Avira Community, I thought, like you, maybe a corrupted file which could be fixed by a re-install. But Lukas says we are no longer supported. Here is what I found:
I found a review site which gives a Review of the 2019 top 10 antivirus for Vista, some free, some paid for:
https://windowsreport.com/antivirus-windows-vista/
and from this, I think I might try Avast:
Avast: protect your Windows Vista PC with Avast Free Antivirus
https://www.avast.com/windows-vista-antivirus
I am also wondering about Comodo:
Comodo: The reviewer says: This is certainly one of the best free antivirus programs available.
Good luck

You have to do a manual update.
I got it working on Windows XP now running with 11 Aug 2020 virus signatures.
Download their tool here at https://www.avira.com/en/support-vdf-update-info
run it and it creates a file in install folder called vdf_fusebundle.zip
in avira do update -> manual update and when asked for the file it will want .xvdf or .nvdf so it WILL NOT show the file you just created, but type the full name and folder manually, then click open, It will then update your virus definitions.
