Is there a way to disable Avira's smart scan?
I have no intention of applying the suggested corrections, and therefore every time I turn on my PC the yellow dot appears on the avira icon, I only care that it signals me if I have a virus, and I wish could disable the other scanners (privacy, performance, software updater).

Been using Avira since 2000, but now I am removing it from my computers, and start the looooong process of searchig for a replacement.
Thank you for all these years of discreet, agile, and efficient antivirus.

I am a paying customer of Avira Antivirus Pro, and now this "Smart scan" feature is pushed upon me and there is no option to disable or uninstall it. I made the mistake to trust Smart scan and let it "fix" the"issues" that it found, and it actually damaged my system. (for example, a "Classic Start Menu" program that I had installed is not working anymore after letting Smart scan "fix issues"). So instead of fixing issues Smart scan damaged my system, and it is really bad that I can't disable this annoying and harmful function. This is a really bad customer experience!
Quote of statement made by Felix Bär (Avira customer support):
"I can promise you, that we take every feedback serious and we consider our thoughts about our changes".Please live up to your promises and offer (paying) customers the option to disable Smart scan and other anoying new "features" that only distract and cause extra work. If you fail to do so, I am sure you will loose customers.

if avira PRO is not restored as before I will not purchase again in the future
I hope it is clear8 -
Is smart scan the reason Avira suddenly keeps scanning without my permission?
I only want Avira to scan when I do a full scan manually or when I'm on a website that tries to infect me.
But periodically and needlessly scanning my system without my permission and no way to disable it,
is not a good idea, Avira.
Please add an option to disable this smart scan thing and spare my hard drive. I don't need any bloatware either,
Windows 10 is spying bloatware, that's why I stick to Windows 7 or 8.
I really hope Avira is not phoning home my data to the five eyes and I hope it's not one of those dodgy anti viruses that spy on their users (like AVG or Avast's web addon or whatever that scandal was). I will only recommend Avira if it's trustworthy, completely private and allows the option to disable smart scan.
A product should not force new features on their paid customers/free users. It's just thrashing my hard drive for no reason.
If Avira shows they don't care, then I will know someone dodgy has given them more money (like the corrupt five eyes agencies). I'm just being honest!
Listen to your users and make suggested changes in a reasonable amount of time, and then we can recommend and uphold Avira's high reputation over your other competitors.
Apparently CCleaner recently became spyware, why some companies stoop so low is beyond me and I hope Avira will never stoop so low but stand above it and keep integrity.

I live about 30 minutes away from Tettnang and Avira HQ and this behavior from Avira really hits home...literally. I have been an Avira customer for several years now because it was a good product and I wanted to support the local economy....buy local. But the "ads" and efforts by Avira to get me to buy another product have become invasive over the last year or so...not just now. This aggressiveness is now appalling to put it bluntly. It is almost as invasive and irritating as having a virus and definitely in the realm of malware now.
Shame on you Avira. I recall reading in the Schwäbische Zeitung something about having new owners. Investcorp is probably what is behind all of this "scheiß" as they are not a service company with the goal of offering a good product as a priority, but it is apparently all about making money. So....I think I am done with Avira. I won't be sending any more money to Bahrain.

as an experienced user i suggest and kindly request to give us the possibility to turn off automatic scan. you can leave it enabled as default, ok for unexperienced users, but give us a way to disable it. i have my own schedules for scan set up, but this is very annoying...
7 -
I am also considering to stop my renewal from 2021, I think is really annoying this new feature. After running it the first time it keeps coming back. I AM NOT GOING TO BUY ANY EXTrA PRODUCTs FROM AVIRA!!!
It is not about "he Smart Scan is a way to help those with less experience to ensure their PC is protected and cleaned up" as suggested above by Toni Ruch.
It is all about marketing seling more products.
4 -
This is ridiculous to not offer an option.
Avira is no longer an AV product, it is an "AV and everything else you want to make us run" product - because there is no option to stop the other "features" running.
There are plenty of other AV products out there, and this has made up my mind to change to one of them.
With this change to the way Avira works you will likely lose the majority of your users who are tech savvy. Its like buying a TV that keeps reminding you to pay the gas bill, yes I can ignore the reminder - but why is it trying to get it on the gas bill game - give me my TV!!
Anyway. Ridiculous.

disaster...every time when install a new software avira cancell it...so i ask one more time, where is the option Exclusion in this new"fabolous"version of avira?

Hi Kokoloko, I have the Italian version, I try to translate, I hope it matches the English one, try going to Security, Prortection Options, and click on the gear next to Real-time protection or System protection, the old configuration window should open where are also the Exceptions.
Then if you want to simplify the procedure you can create a link to the avconfig.exe file located in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\Antivirus2 -
thanks domenico -_-

Been using Aviria Antivirus since either Windows XP or Windows 7 (that's how long I don't even remember which) and I was ok with the ads that kept popping up as they were only showing at my system tray area and I could close if not interested. But with this smart scan that keeps popping up even when I choose to skip like every time I power on my computer, I am finally going to uninstall and just use the Windows Defender and just keep practicing safe browsing and downloading or until I find an alternative.

I've been with Avira for as long as they have been a company and they have been my go to for virus software. I've been paying for virus software, not this cruddy bloatware. I will not be renewing my subscription for 2021. There are numerous antivirus software out there that work as well as Avira and do not have the bloated features. Sorry Avira. I want Antivirus, not Antivirus and a bunch of other crap that I don't use. It's been a good ride, but I'm out. Headed to another product that begins with the word Bit.
7 -
Problem solved....for me at least....I uninstalled Avira Anti-Virus Pro from my laptop and desktop and cancelled the subscription renewal. Making the user "scan" for "problems" in order to get rid of the little yellow dot and to have the software verify that everything is ok is unacceptable and a shameful tactic. There was also the recent pop-up ads that I had to deal with when I uninstalled Phantom VPN. So this issue isn't the first one since Avira was purchased by Investcorp. But it is the last time Avira will get a dime from me under their current owners.

Smart san makes my laptop unusable for 20 minutes after booting, so I have now cancelled my subscription and will change to another virus protection programme. It is also annoying to be asked to upgrade to extras when I already have the Pro version. Virus protection should not interefere with working on my laptop. It is a shame. I have used the Pro version for years and now it is nothing but a problem.

So the truth is a greedy grubby business named 'Investcorp' bought Avira and they have turned it into a business to grind the users for every cent they can through any means necessary. Everyone is forgetting the line between a product being for the user or against the user for profits. There is also a fine line between a product advertising its professional or paid for services and introducing bloatware, adware and becoming malicious in doing so to promote paid content or features. Not so long ago we called such actions as 'malicious' and we could scan for them and remove them because of their malicious nature. I have been watching over the years as software developers and vendors push the users more and more into doing things they do not want or need and paying for subscriptions they never needed by forceful tactics and with this most recent update Avira has crossed the line from being an Antivirus for the users into being nothing other than bloatware and adware with malicious features the user can not remove or disable as doing so would not serve the financial interests of 'Investcorp'. When I installed Avira on a users system I did so knowing it was between the user and Avira if they purchased Avira. Now it is out of hand and I promise you Avira and 'Investcorp' you are loosing users but worse you are loosing our trust, respect and our faith in your products. Once we walk away you have to work twice as hard to get us back. My suggestion is restore Avira Antivirus to what it was now and leave things the way they were. It is better you earn a user or a customer rather than trick or force them to being a user or a client through deceptive or false flagging reports with a malicious features embedded in the core of your product that can not be removed or disabled that by its very execution is malicious as it is reporting things that are not problems to be problems. So what if someone has not updated to the latest version of Windows 10 and when did it become your business to breach the privacy of your users to conduct such scans anyway and who is in charge of the results to begin with.. who gets to decide what is or is not good when your primary job was to help a user protect and scan their computer with a lightweight and very functional Antivirus Program?? If you have not noticed the free users are leaving and the paid users are also leaving.. good job, well done, pat yourselves on the back because you did a whoopsie and now I wonder if you will be brave enough to admit it or will you have too much pride and arrogance to admit you put your own financial interests above that of your users and in doing so you crossed the line where you have become malicious to the users you have or had?? The free users used your product but also advertised it for you by deploying it or telling other users about your product and at some point many became paying customers. Wake up, restore Avira Antivirus to what it once was and never assume your users are idiots that need you to do everything for them.. we are not the idiots you would like us to be!!

I've been using Avira for about 15 years probably and always install it on clients home personal computers and let them decide if they want to upgrade to the Pro version. After this latest update I already got a call from a confused customer who thought his computer was infected with something when it was just the new Smart scan feature. So, for all the reasons that have been described by all others here, I'll have to move my customers away from Avira for now. Thanks for an excellent antivirus throughout the years. If all this is corrected, I'll happily be back and my customers as well.

I don't need avira to let let me know if I have or not obsoletes programs.I know what I have in my PC
And even, the programs themselves tell me if I want to ugrade.
It is not the role of an antivirus.Just do your job, nothing else
Stop

I have contacted Avira support about this and also that Avira does a full scan each time I boot my laptop. It also initiated a scan while I was making a recording of a speech. But support have not even bothered to reply to my questions beyond sending an automatic ticket.
It seems that paying for support is also a waste of money. When my subscription is up for renewal I will change to another antivirus programme. One that just does this one job and nothing else, probabaly a free one will be enough.
It is a shame Avira care more about money than looking after loyal customers.

AIO programs do not work, they can severely damage a system, we have known that for more than two decades. Windows 10 especially takes care of itself, and a fully configurable programs like CCleaner can take care of the rest.. Aside from all the running garbage Avira has loaded into my system without my permission, the fact that I can't easily find the basic configuration and that I can't configure Avira to my needs once I do find it is unforgivable. New owners, take note, this product sucks, when even your paid customers are complaining you need to listen and do something.
2 -
I fully agree with the other users here. I have been a loyal and paying customer for years (since Windows 7 or even longer - can't remember). My current 3yr license is still valid for another 2 years or so but I don't think I will use it up. This intrusive behavior is rouge, fishy and, to me, on the edge to fraud. Avira used to be great but somehow it went down the drain.
Thank you for a once great software but obviously it's time to move on.

I use and I prefer to use Avira as an antivirus software. I don't expect Avira to check for outdated software or drivers on my machine, for duplicated or temporary files an so on. Please keep the Avira as an antivirus solution and focus on how to make it lightweight. These new "features" are exclusive annoying and undesired.

Hallo,
dies ist ein Test.

Because of Smartscan, I just cancelled my Antivirus Pro subscription and uninstalled all Avira software from my computer. It annoyed me way too much that I am not even given a choice to simply disable it.
Thanks for all the years I used to be very happy with Avira, although it's in the past now.

If there isn't a way to prevent "smart scan" from running I shall not be renewing my subscription this year and switch to another AV - I'm sure there's going to be some nice Black Friday deals so switching won't cost much. I'm really annoyed at Avira for forcing me in to this decision but software that thinks it knows better than the customer doesn't know it's customer at all. I've been a long time user of AV Pro (5 user license for at least a decade now) but I'm saying no to this.

I support others. I have a license for 35 seats for 40 more days. If there are no changes, I will not extend it. I do not recommend to anyone. The first installation screen is enough with the "simple installation" / "I'm advanced" option
I wants a simple antivirus program that won't slow down my computer, not a lot of background services.4 -
Sorry Aviva have had enough. You obviously have no interest in the comments from your loyal users who want a simple and effective free anti virus software which does what it says on the tin. Everything else is extraneous noise which the majority of us do not want. Avira is uninstalled and I'm off to try Kaspersky. Congratulations Avira - another previously well satisfied customer is jumping ship

I point out something that had never happened to me until a few days ago, for 3 days when I started the PC the smart scan screen appeared, in the end I had to start the scan to get him out of my way.
I'm trying to resist, hoping that sooner or later it will be possible to disable this damned smart scan, but the temptation to switch to something else is getting stronger.2 -
I guess there won't be any more answer from dev team as the last in date told some people they just were reluctant to change. Easy way to close any discussion, the matter cannot come from the product but from user.
In fact that's not a problem of adaptation to changing things but a concern about how intrusive your product becomes. I want an antivirus, not a hardware store, tweaking tool, trying to handle and manage evrything on computer.
I'm fed-up on seeing pop-ups about unwanted smart scans, I don't want a product tirelessly lighting up as a chrismas tree, pretending something goes wrong. As many of us, I just want a good antivirus and only an antivirus.
I was realy enjoying the past 13 years with avira but I realize your product is not the one it formerly was, and mostly not the one I want as it is by now.
I am reluctant to the bad way you went with your product but not to the change of product.7 -
I've been using Avira since 2005, it's fifteen years ago. The reason is because Avira is very simple, just an antivirus, but it does that and ONLY that, and IMO the best at that. The way they doing it now is simply shitty move. Default bloatware installed and no way to disable it, really killed Avira the people used to rely on. So sad for me to say this, but if this rubbish behaviour is not changed, it seems it's the end of the road for me using Avira in all my PCs and laptops. Probably will stick to Defender or any other antivirus that do the way people install antivirus intended for.
