How does Avira Free detect Internet availability?

I see access to www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt being accessed in my external firewall logs.

Any other checks?

Avira Free is indicating that it can't access the Internet, yet Internet access is working fine for everything except Avira.

Windows 10 Home

 

Avira updates seem to be working OK - but Software Updater can't access the Internet and the same for Web protection, Email protection & Ransomeware protection

  Hello Bruce,

  Well, The Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) is a feature in Microsoft operating systems that check whether the computer has an active Internet connection. Here, a web server is provided by Microsoft, which must be accessible.

  If Avira isn't able to connect to the internet, please make sure that your mentioned external firewall isn't blocking any Avira-related file/ service.
