Avira browser extension removed but keeps coming back

I have never knowingly installed Avira, yet I have started getting messages saying it has been added as an extension each time I open a new browser - Firefox, Edge, or Chrome.  I looked in 'Remove apps' and Avira is not showing.  What is causing this and how can I stop it?

  PS I am in Win 10 and everything is up to date.

  I am familiar with those instructions, but they do not apply.  The problem I want to remove is not the browser extension itself, but the unknown entity that keeps trying to instal the extension.

  I have never installed any Avira software, but recently when opening either Chrome or Edge I got messages asking if I wanted the extension installed.  I said no, and it wasn't, but I still want to deal with the intrusion.  I suspect it got in bundled with a game my kid installed. 

  I had never heard of Avira and, now I have, I am put off from using it.
