Error message when scanning a selected file in Windows Explorer
AbgeschlossenI used to be able to select a file in Windows Explorer, right-click on the file and select "Scan selected files with Avira" without any problems. I used to depend on this function working immediately when I selected a new file or files I had just downloaded into "Downloads" directory. Now i get an error message for any scan attempt which tells me "The scanning process stopped!" It tells me "There was a problem while scanning your files. Restart the scan to fix it." Upon restarting the scan it works. What is the cause of this error?
My system is Windows 10 Pro Version 21H2 OS build 19044.1645 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4170.0 and Avira Security 1.1.64.27947.

Hello Bill,
We have the same settings, only our system is Windows Home.
For my installation, the setting "Check selected files with Avira" works perfectly.
Please check the Avira installation to see if "Shell Extensions" has been activated by you, possibly with a repair installation.
It is strange that these extensions have to be requested twice.
Have you ever considered discussing this problem with Windows because these shell extensions are available for almost all virus scanner companies, not only for Avira, depending on which one is installed?
You are writing here in the community, a publicly accessible forum, unfortunately we do not have access to your customer account or to your installation.
Premium customers with a valid licence can contact the support team directly from their customer account under "Support". From there, it is possible to check your installation.Unfortunately, we can only talk about a guess here. We regret that we cannot provide any concrete instructions; this would require a look at your installation.
If something is still unclear, please let us know, and we will be pleased to help.
Kind regards

Thanks Pascha!
I checked the settings for scans. They haven't changed in a long time! In "PC Protection" both modes have "Use Smart Extensions" set. Is there another setting for extensions which would affect normal selected file scanning?
I did find that I had been downgraded to Free version during the last software update and had to reload the activation key! I'll have to watch out for that next time.
As for the problem, it's still there! At least it works at the second attempt.
I do have an exclusion setting but it shouldn't affect the scan of a selected file. It applies to executables I have created from Python code. Avira doesn't like them and keeps deleting them immediately after creation. Very annoying!
Looks like I'll just have to live with the file scanning feature for the moment. It just means that it takes longer than necessary.
Regards.

Hello Bill,
This selection is offered to you during the Avira installation.

It should be activated for you because it works, even if it is delayed.
We would carry out a repair installation because sometimes something can be damaged, i.e. it no longer works correctly.Just our idea.
Many greetings

Thanks again!
I am pleased to say that another repair attempt has removed the problem. It now works fine!
