what is real time protection? why do I suddenly have a message saying that it's switched off even though I've changed nothing? why isn't it possible to switch it back on? - I just get error message 500 saying it isn't possible to change the service state to enabled?

The real-time protection is very important, always make sure that it is activated. It tries to protect your computer from malware as soon as it is switched on.
Unfortunately you did not tell us which version of Avira is installed on which operating system.

Please try a repair installation, see :
