Adding scan exceptions to Avira Free Antivirus for Mac

I've seen this suggestion for adding excluded paths to Avira Antivirus for Mac, but I would like to confirm that this also applies for the free version?

When I go to /Applications/Avira.app/Contents there is no directory called config, so when I try to open the file avguard.conf for editing, it is blank.  The example that appears in the article suggests that there will probably be existing configuration items so I am suspicious that that configuration settings may be handled differently in the free version.
