Contact without an active license?

Is there a way to talk to someone in support with having an active license?
I purchased an activation code from what I thought was a reputable source. When I try to redeem it, I just get this message at the bottom that says "Error!"
I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is an actual code, or if I got scammed.

Have you already tried to contact or complain to the seller (?) with your proof of purchase?

Thanks for your response! I honestly didn't expect one so quick.
So, to be a bit more clear, I purchased an activation code off of Amazon.
I did follow those instructions, several times. In fact, I just did again, just to make sure I wasn't being numb. All it does is think for a second, then the word "Error!" pops up below the fields. That is literally exactly what it says and all it says.
I attempted to get in touch with the seller with no luck. I did manage to get in touch with someone at Amazon, but they basically told me that it was my problem, not theirs. Well, technically they told me to contact Avira support, which I can't do directly without an active subscription.
I'm just trying to figure out if there's an actual problem here, or if I got scammed and am going to have to eat the money.

Normally the seller is liable for faultless goods.
Unfortunately, you have still not told us which version of Avira it is. You can already see from this how up-to-date the purchased goods are. When did you purchase this license. There are sometimes reduced products that are no longer up to date or have exceeded the activation time window.
A code can only be activated once. An immediately displayed "error" indicates that the code is no longer up-to-date or that there was an error during activation.
Please answer the questions - which Avira version and when purchased - that are important for replacing the license. With this information we will inform you about further stepsWe are waiting for your feedback, then we will discuss how to get your paid licence.

After going back to get the exact version information, I realized that I am, in fact, an idiot.
Three days ago I blithely purchased a one year, one device license for Avira Antivirus Pro 2017.
So, basically I purchased something that I should have been full well aware would not work at this point, but wasn't paying enough attention to notice. While it still irritates me that someone is selling codes that are no longer valid, I will reluctantly admit that this one is about 98% my own fault.
Is there any way you can bring this infringement to the attention of Amazon? They really don't care what I have to say, but a complaint from you might actually get this seller taken down. I can give you a link straight to the product / seller's page if it's something you may be inclined to pursue.
Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help me. I think you guys are great and have and have a great product, and I'll be picking up an actual, valid license in the near future.

First our appreciation that you are so honest and have described the process in detail. You are not an "idiot", you have overlooked a few important things when buying, which unfortunately were still offered to customers.
Many people do not contact us again after realising that their licence has expired.
