Possible False positives

I recently tried to back up by laptop to an external hard drive.  However it stopped about 10 minutes in as Avira had detected possible Malware. I have been trying to submit the files for analysis however when I go into the directory on the external drive the file isn't there. The folders are all there but the file isn't. I'm not sure what to do next in order to understand if there is an issue or whether it is a false positive? I would be grateful for any advice.
