Avira Free Antivirus for Mac (version 3.10.12.10)
First of all, thanks for providing a useful program fee of charge!
Here are some questions that came up with my computer [iMac Core i5 (iMac12,1 Mid-2011) under OS X 10.11.6 with Safari 11.1.2] and a few suggestions that might be helpful for new users of Avira.
1. I installed Avira from the downloaded file avira_en_afms0_1602343114-1566010030__wsnew2.dmg. I created a new subfolder within my Applications folder for Avira-related files and dragged the dmg file and Avira app into it. When I tried to run Avira, it quit immediately with an error message that I don't remember.
I suspected that my drag of the Avira app was the cause of the error, so I trashed the app, then repeated opening the dmg file to re-install Avira. (I didn't know at this time that there was an Uninstall command available in Avira because there was no "Help" column, as detailed in item 2 below.)
After the second installation I left Avira where the installer put it and was able to run a Quick Scan and a Computer Scan. Did the error on the first installation occur because I had moved the Avira app to a subfolder of Applications? If so, you should warn users against moving the Avira app.
2. During an overnight Computer scan with the second-installed Avira app, there was no menubar "Help" column showing. However, after the scan Avira did show it. Since Avira was able to run a scan, presumably it was fully installed. Why did it not reveal the "Help" column in the menubar until after the first scan was complete?
3. Nowhere in the app or on your website could I discover which folders of which storage device(s) would be scanned during a "Quick scan" or a "Computer scan". The Settings option doesn't allow any choice of which devices and folders to scan. The "Avira Help" item in the menubar "Help" column doesn't tell how to find out what devices and folders will be scanned. Neither does the "Scan Finished" window reveal this information.
I haven't yet succeeded in finding out what is scanned during "Quick scan". By noting what items are listed in the "Custom scan" option, I finally learned (I think) that Avira's "Computer scan" would scan Users/MyAccount/Documents on the boot-up device.
It should not require detective work for the user to determine what devices and folders will be scanned. They should be stated explicitly by Avira before a scan is started, during the scan, and in the Scan Finished window.
4. My iMac uses an external SSD as the Startup Disk. The computer's internal hard disk is connected but rarely accsessed. Just before the start of the Computer scan, Avira said it was checking the computer's "hard drive", but as stated in item 3 above, I believe it scanned the SSD.
5. After the "Computer scan", the "Scan Finished" window gave these Scan Results:
Detected risks 5; Treated 5; Successful 1; Failed 4.
What is its name and location of the one successfully treated file? What "treatment" was applied to it? How do I find out which are the four risky untreated files?
