    +1 Strong Agree

This latest version with all the uninstallable bloatware is a pestilence.  Just try finding the Antivirus control panel in that sea of pretty Material Design garbage.

I give them a few weeks, then uninstall, stop purchasing, no longer recommend

Me too, I would like to disable smart scan. Not happy with the new design. Before I installed Avira and could go on doing what I am getting my money for. Now I have to deal with Avira every day it seems.

    Matthias -

    I fully agree!

Avira used to be great. I have been using it for 10 or more years. Now it keeps bothering me with rubbish I don't care about. It's trying to scare users with alleged security issues and wants them to buy more Avira software to fix those issues. To me, this is rogue and more than fishy.

Since the support doesn't seem to care about their customers opinion, this will be my last Avira license. Unfortunately it expires only in two years. Maybe I don't wait that long.

I notice that no one answered the original question:  How to disable smartscan and the other crap I did not want.  So does that mean Avira will not let us disable that stuff ??  I agree with most other users here - I paid for "anti-virus" not all this other crap that keeps sucking up CPU time and telling me what I should do.  I paid for a 3-year subscription for 3 machines.  Looks like I'm going to uninstall all this crap (if that's possible) and buy something else.

Yet another unresponsive company that is too busy telling what to do instead of providing a useful product and answering questions.

I have uninstalled Avira on my wifes computer. She has pressed the wrong button and ...Avira Prime got installed and monthly charges on her creditcard. She simply did not know what she was doing (no computer wizard just a simple user).

Installed Avast instead. But... it seems that same kind of crap. Avast too is coming up with all kind of messages on which software ought to be updated and how to fasten your computer. I do not want this. I have other software checking this at my own time intervals. So it is not Avira, it is not Avast... will have to search on

Quick follow-up on my original post.

I sent a message to Avira about this matter -- about disabling all the non-antivirus stuff (smart scan and similar).  Here is their response (verbatim):

"Because of the changing digital landscape, threats are no longer caused only by viruses and malware, making online protection more complex. To ensure our users remain protected in the connected world, Avira created Avira Security, the successor of Avira Antivirus Pro. As Avira Security is the new version of Antivirus Pro, we no longer offer the old version of product interface. With Avira Security, our users still have access to the AV Pro that they know, in addition to other functionality to protect their online security and privacy and improve performance. These new features include VPN, Password Manager, Software Updater and more – all managed from the single Avira Security interface. "

Apparently I can not disable any of the 'stuff' I do not want nor can it be removed.

Other annoying issues are messages like: "Your last background scan found issues to fix."
Then a button to "fix" it all.  No description of what it found, what it is going to "fix", or how it will "fix" the "issues".  I refuse to proceed.  (I was burned badly some years ago when I let some software "fix" my machine.  Never again.)

    Hi MR in MD

    Thanks for this follow-up.

Same here: I had terrible experiences with software that does things you cannot control. Our company's computer specialist advises us strongly to change.

Has anyone here a recommendation for other anti-virus software?
As I have written in an earlier post in my opinion it is not Avast.... So which one to turn to?

    Ulrich,

What to use ??  Good question.  I have no recommendations based on experience.  I used to use Kaspersky, but since some (many ?) company officers have been linked to Russian Intelligence that I stay far away from their product.  For the Win10 machine I recently started using - I briefly looked at 'BitDefender'.  I want to do some more research and reading about it, but right now that's the direction I'm leaning.
