Windows 7 won't finish booting, stuck on "Welcome" screen
AnsweredHello,
I use Avira free AV on a Windows 7 desktop. Since it is set to automatically update, that happens in the background. The computer will not finish booting boot now, and in safe mode, it hangs on \windows\system32\drivers\avdevprot.sys. I am wondering if the newest Avira update is what is causing my problem? System restore has failed. There is no problem detected in the memory modules, and chkdks ha ssuccessfully executed several times. The computer will sometimes boot as far as the user screen, but once I choose my identity and enter the password, it hangs on the "Welcome" screen and the progress icon just keeps spinning. If anyone could shed some light on what the problem might be and how to correct it, I would be grateful. I am currently using my system disks to try to restore it that way, but it has already failed at that one time.

Hello Michael,
First of all, we would recommend you to update your Windows system in general, as Windows 7 is already no longer supported by Microsoft and also not fully supported by the Avira software, and it is an old operating system. Some technical changes/advances are probably no longer compatible. Until now, you could still try to uninstall the software completely and install the latest version via the Avira dashboard / account.
As you describe, however, this probably no longer brings a satisfactory correct solution. Do you want to continue working with this old OS?Customers of the Premium products with a valid licence can contact the support team directly:
- or
- https://support.avira.com/hc/en-us scroll down ⇒ Contact Avira
Technical checks can be initiated from there, which we do not have access to here in the publicly accessible forum - Data protection GDPR.
We regret not being able to give you another solution for an outdated OS.
Kind regards and have a nice Sunday
