Bug Report: Avira can wipe USB stick
CompletedThis report is not to complain or attack Avira. Just thought the developers should know and/or the community.
Short description is that Avira not only quarantined a file but under certain circumstances can wipe other non-quarantined files on an external USB stick. The first time it happened it completely wiped my USB stick clean. The second it was only a partial wipe.
Now for the long explanation:
I am an "amateur" coder with a personal VB .net application (Visual Studio 2019) that Avira gives a false positive on and sends it to the quarantine. I know it is clean because I coded it myself but I think when it gets compiled the built in timer in the code triggers the Avira heuristic detection.
There is a period of time from when you copy the freshly compiled file over to the USB stick that you don't know if Avira quarantine will trigger. I have whitelisted the file so it is supposed to ignore it but I think that if I make enough changes to the app that Avira treats it like a new file. Sometimes it gets quarantined and sometimes it doesn't. Here comes the dangerous part. If you unmount the USB stick in preparation to remove it AND THEN the Avira quarantine is triggered you run the risk of nuking files on your USB stick. What I didn't do is remount the USB stick (which I probably should have done) before restoring the file from quarantine.
If you don't re-mount the USB stick before restoring a quarantined file Avira will attempt to restore it (without warning that it is unmounted) and will nuke innocent files and folders on the USB stick! At least this is the conclusion I have come to. The wipe only happens if I am quick on the draw and unmount the USB stick before the quarantine/restore is completed.
Please look into this developers!
PS: it was Avira free version.
