Avira Free security not more compatible with Mac OS version 10.15.7

  MacOS 10.15.7 with the latest security updates is fully supported by Apple through November 2022. That is not an acceptable answer.

  This is too bad as I was logging in to buy a subscription – and I will but not Avira.

  Despite the blow off from  Lukas Huptas, Avira Community Manager, the issue was pretty easy to resolve.

  Background: I uninstalled Avira because Apple was concerned that it was the cause of a conflict many are having with Dropbox. After removal, we were able to determine that the conflict was a current Corel product. I finally purged it from my system and the main Dropbox issue went away. Then Apple Engineering advised me to reinstall Avira Free—if the problem was really gone, then I could feel free to purchase. That is where I became stuck. The problem is that the installer thinks its been run—it hadn't.

  So, I tried purging Avira completely from my system as I had to for Corel. Apple's Finder/Find is inadequate no matter how you filter so I used Find Any File from Thomas Templemann (shareware — if you like it, purchase from the App Store to be notified of updates). With FAF, enter Avira into the box, then press the Option key to Search All including the Root — this needs to be done. Highlight all the resulting files with Avira, .avira, .avira. etc. and send to Trash. Ignore anything where avira is part of a name, of course. Empty Trash.

  You will see a folder in Library/System Extensions/beginning with a long number—it still has two files to remove. To remove that folder, you need to Disable SIP (Google is your friend). Now remove the last avira files and Empty Trash.

  Reboot, download and run the installer. It should now behave and download the actual installer and run it. Reboot again (yes, really) and you'll go to System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General, click on the lock and Allow the installer to finish, go to the Privacy tab, Full Disk Access where the Avira files are checked or not, check them, close the panel and it should now work.

  Re-enable SIP. It really is there for your protection.

  I will wait a few days to see if the Dropbox problem is resolved. If so, then and only then will I purchase licenses.
