Strange behavior after Mac Big Sur 11.4 update
Hello, Just updated my paid subscription to Mac Big Sur 11.4. In the top bar, there is a closed Avira umbrella: Your antivirus protection is off. There is an option to "Set up Avira Security. When I click on the set up option, I see the "Let's set up Avira Security first" screen, and click on the "Start setting up" button. This shows my signed in Avira Prime main screen. Here it works as it always has...
Avira has Full Disk Access in Security and Privacy.
Same behavior on a Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. Both just updated to Big Sur 11.4.
Is there a fix for this yet?

Forgot to say the Closed umbrella with the red dot and the "Set up Avira Security" on the top bar never goes away. Real-time scanning is not activated, I assume. And I have to "set up" every time I want to do a manual update.

Same strange behavious on my side, also due to MacOS 11.4 update (for a T2 Macbook pro - 2018) I suppose a fix is needed!

+1 on this. I tried uninstalling Avira but the menu bar icon is persistent which is annoying as hell.

It seems that the app is running correctlly. I can start it from the icon in the Applications folder and it runs great. I think we just need to get rid of the annoying menu bar icon... Help?!

Weird. The icon just started working again. Maybe an issue with Avira servers has been resolved. Would still like to be able to hide the icon from the menu bar!

The same issue here... and still not fixed.

+1 on this. Same issue here.
Tried an uninstall / clean install and update of Avira, all components authorised and things still the same. Umbrella closed with red dot and menu is 'Set up Avira security".

The same problem here with 2 MacBook Pro after update to MacOS Big Sur 11.4 :-(

Has everyone tried clicking the icon an hour or more after updating?

Same problem on my MacBook Pro and iMac after the 11.4 update. Seems to work fine with SIP disabled but returns if SIP is enabled. Not sure if Avira is truly not working with SIP on or if this is just an issue with the icon.

Exactly same problem. Service seems to be running but the notification icon says that Avira protection is off. This started after the 11.4 update as mentioned before. Yes, I've tried clicking on the icon throughout the day. No change.

Same problem on my iMac after the 11.4 update!

Same issue here after updating to 11.4 on two Macs: old MacBookPro (Intel) and new MacMini (M1/Apple Silicon) - closed umbrella with red for on top right corner. Re-installing after complete uninstallation does not help - same effect. Rebooting does not help as well. Seems like real time scanning is not activated even if activated in Avira's settings (where the switch is only light blue).

My umbrella has gone backwards after a reboot.

Appears to be working now, May 26, 16:45 EDT - on my iMac, but not on my MacBook Pro. Odd.

Still doesn't work. I've uninstalled it, because I think is messing with the machine, a MacbookPro. How can we be notified on a new upgrade?

The umbrella icon is also closed + red dot on macOS 11.4. However, real-time protection seems to work. I tested it with Eicar and real samples.

Hi,
This long wait for a technical fix for this ongoing issue is quite poor performance on the part of Avira.
These type of issues regarding real-time protection should be fixed within a day or two.
This has been dragging on for almost a week now and still NO indication of any timeframe for a technical solution.

Hi,
My mac mini is also having this problem and I tried this solution, actually reinstalling. it has changed nothing about this problem. still closed umbrella and red dot is on. maybe I did it wrong way, because there was no uninstaller for Avira Security app on my Mac, so I drop Avira Security.app on trash can. :-<

I have also tried every solution suggested here on this forum: uninstall, reinstall, reboot and wait for 24 hours or more, still this problem persists and no solution in sight.
Apparently this has been an ongoing issue which occurs after every update to the macos operating system.
Avira are very slow to fix these technical issues.
It is important to note that no other mac antivirus has this persistent ongoing issue after each and every update.
I currently seeking another mac antivirus product which is free from these longstanding technical issue which Avira take ages to fix.
This technical issue affects both users of the Avira Free antivirus and the paid for Avira Prime, it is shameful that people pay good hard earned money for an antivirus product that still has long standing technical issues.
Long waits to fix these types of technical issues are 100% completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

A few days after find the issue and tried whatever solution proposed, I'm finaly able to scan and real-time protection working.
What have I done and I'm a subscriber of Avira Prime:
1. I've downloaded and installed Avira Free, being logged out from my account;
2. Setup the App;
3. Login to my account through the App.
The icon on status bar continues with the red dot and I don't have notifications or a way to configure it, so I have no information when the app is updated or Real-Time Protection detects something (I've tried EICAR file, it goes to Quarantine as expected, but no notification).
Anyone to confirm this procedure?
Regards

For me, disabling Avira in Full Disk Access permissions and then re-enabling it (ticking the box again) sorted out the problem.

Thanks, Barnaby. Your solution worked for me too. I did it for both Avira Scan Service and Avira Security. Didn't know if I needed to do it for one or the other, or both, so I just did both.

Barnaby, that did not work for me. However, I have noticed that if I just leave it alone, eventually, it begins to work - for a while, then stops. This repeats. Haven't found what causes it to turn on then off.

The laptop go to sleep for the weekend. When I wake it up this morning it was working, until now .... Don't understand what happened. Updated normally, notifications working, it seems normal behaviour.
Let's wait and see!

My solution worked until I restarted my mac - then I needed to do the 'full disk access' process again to open the umbrella...
