Avira returning to 'Allow important areas of your Mac to be scanned' screen
AnsweredHi, I recently installed Avira on an old Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) running Catalina. It seems to have configured fine but every time I open the app it takes me back to the 'Allow important areas of your Mac to be scanned' screen, forcing me to click Permissions Granted in the menu bar every time (as suggested in the FAQ page). I did give Full Disk Access to Avira Scan Service though the Avira Security Helper does not show up in Privacy settings (I suspect this is why it keeps going back to that screen).
Also:
- Running scans does work and the app says my antivirus protection is on
- The taskbar helper says my antivirus protection is off and it only has a 'Set up Avira Security' option
- I did grant Avira permissions in my firewall and also tried disabling it

Hello A C,
Unfortunately, you didn't give us any specific information with the version number of your macOS installation, did you read the following guide:
Does Avira Security for Mac run on older operating systems? – Official Avira Support | Knowledgebase & Customer Support | AviraHere you can find the instructions for the check:
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201260
- "I have granted the Avira Scan Service full hard disk access, although the Avira Security Helper does not appear in the privacy settings."- "The taskbar help says that my anti-virus protection is turned off and only has the option 'Set up Avira Security'."
After this message, you can assume that your antivirus protection is not installed correctly. Please describe exactly which Avira version (free or paid version?) you have installed and from where you downloaded it. It is also helpful to check your Avira installation.

Thanks for the reply pascha45. I am running Catalina 10.15.7 so it should in theory be compatible, judging by that first link.
I downloaded the installer from the official Avira website, the software version is 1.13.3 and it is the free version. I was looking into trying it out before upgrading but cannot seem to get it to work...

Hello A C,
According to your description, it is unfortunately not possible for us to get an idea of the strange behaviour. We are a public forum, unfortunately we do not have access to your customer account and your installation.
Did you install the Avira version for the first time?
Did you install Avira software or other protection programs before and uninstalled them cleanly? We recommend a clean uninstallation and then a new installation of the Avira version after a restart. Unfortunately, we do not have access to your installation here in this forum.
Many greetings

I figured out a solution in case anyone else runs into this issue. The Avira Security Helper app file is located in /Library/Application Support/Avira Security. I then manually added it under Full Disk Access in System Preferences and the taskbar helper is now working correctly.
