Security scan is finishing prematurely

I believe I have an infection that Avira prime is not catching.  When I run a full system scan it doesn't seem to scan all of my files.  It scans for a while and then finishes, I believe prematurely, saying everything is okay.  The last time I ran the scan, Oct.1, it scanned a total of 406,685 files.  Previous scans with Windows Defender scanned well over a million files.

The same thing happens sometimes when I play videos.  The video will play part way, and then just skip to the end.  Other symptoms:  I'll often lose my internet connection briefly.  My computer is not as responsive, and some actions take longer than they should.

I'm running Windows 8.1.  Please advise.
