Avira Free Security for Mac – Unable to perform scans or turn on antivirus protection
AnsweredI noticed today that the Avira app menu (in the menu bar at the top of the screen) has a notification symbol. When I click on it, it says "Your antivirus protection is turned off", and only gives the option to "Set up Avira Security". I clicked that and it opened the full desktop application. In "Protection Options", I am able to seemingly turn on "Real-time protection", but doing so doesn't change anything. I am also unable to run any scans. The application was working just fine last week, and I've used it several times. I'm not sure why it's not working.
I've read other posts on here with people citing similar problems, but the proposed solutions are all exclusively meant for Windows users.
Based on this article, I think this might have happened because I use a separate application (AVG Cleaner) to clean junk files and other clutter from my computer. I've seen two proposed solutions to this. The first (based on the aforementioned article) is to download and run a file called "bfe-fw-fix.exe", but this doesn't run on Mac. The second (based on this article) is to re-download the installation file, open it, and select "Repair/Update", but this option doesn't seem to exist on Mac – double-clicking the file just immediately goes through the normal installation process.
What can I do to fix this?
